How it works
Job offers, payslips and budgets all use different pay periods. An hourly rate is easy to compare between jobs, a monthly figure is what matters for rent, and an annual salary is what most job adverts and tax brackets use. This calculator converts any one of them into all the others.
Everything is converted to a yearly total first, using your actual working pattern: hours per week, days per week and weeks worked per year. Then that total is divided back out into each pay period. A standard full-time job of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 paid hours a year, which is why $1 an hour is roughly $2,000 a year. If you get unpaid leave, or work seasonally, reduce the weeks so the hourly figure reflects reality.
Note the difference between every two weeks (26 pay days a year) and twice a month (24 pay days). Biweekly pay means two months a year contain a third pay day. All figures are gross pay, before income tax, social contributions and other deductions.
Formula
Daily pay uses days per week × weeks per year, biweekly pay uses weeks ÷ 2, and twice-monthly pay divides the annual total by 24.
Example
At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, you work 2,080 hours and earn $52,000 a year. That is $4,333.33 a month, $1,000 a week, $2,000 every two weeks and $200 a day. If you take 4 weeks of unpaid leave, the annual total falls to $48,000. To match a $60,000 salary at the same hours, you would need about $28.85 an hour.
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a year?
A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours, and a 35-hour week is 1,820 hours. Subtract unpaid holidays if they apply.
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. These are gross figures. Your take-home pay depends on income tax, social security or national insurance, pension contributions and other deductions where you live.
How do I compare a salaried job with an hourly one?
Convert both to an hourly rate using the real hours each job expects, including regular overtime for salaried roles. Also compare benefits, such as paid leave, health cover and pension matching.
