How it works

Retyping a paragraph because caps lock was on, or because a heading needs to be in title case, is tedious. This converter rewrites the capitalisation of any text instantly and handles both writing styles and the naming conventions programmers use.

Title Case follows the common style-guide rule: capitalise the first and last words and all major words, but keep short articles, conjunctions and prepositions (a, an, the, and, but, or, of, in, on, to and similar) in lowercase unless they start or end the title or follow a colon. Capitalize Each Word simply capitalises every word, which some headline styles prefer. Sentence case lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter of each sentence and the word "I". Proper nouns such as names and places can't be detected automatically, so check them afterwards.

The programming cases split text into words at spaces, punctuation and existing lowercase-to-uppercase boundaries, then join them: camelCase for JavaScript and Java variables, PascalCase for class names, snake_case for Python and databases, kebab-case for URLs and CSS classes, and CONSTANT_CASE for constants. Each line is converted separately, so you can convert a whole list of names at once. Your text stays in your browser.

Formula

"user account id" → camelCase: userAccountId → PascalCase: UserAccountId → snake_case: user_account_id → kebab-case: user-account-id → CONSTANT_CASE: USER_ACCOUNT_ID

Example

The text "the lord of the rings: the return of the king" becomes "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in Title Case: "of" and "the" stay lowercase except where "The" follows the colon. In Sentence case it becomes "The lord of the rings: the return of the king", and in kebab-case "the-lord-of-the-rings-the-return-of-the-king", ready to use as a URL slug.

Frequently asked questions

Which words stay lowercase in title case?

Short articles, conjunctions and prepositions, such as a, an, the, and, but, or, for, of, in, on, at, to, by and up, unless they are the first or last word or follow a colon. Style guides such as AP and Chicago differ slightly on longer prepositions.

Will sentence case keep names capitalised?

No. It can't tell which words are proper nouns, so names like 'London' or 'Maria' become lowercase unless they start a sentence. Re-capitalise them after converting.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, and the text isn't saved or added to the share link.
