How it works
"Lorem ipsum" is the standard placeholder text of printing and design. Designers drop it into layouts, templates, wireframes and websites so that people reviewing a design focus on the typography and layout instead of reading the words. It has been used this way since at least the 1960s, when it appeared on Letraset transfer sheets, and later in desktop publishing software.
The text looks like Latin but isn't quite. It comes from a scrambled passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), written in 45 BC, with words cut, altered and rearranged. That's exactly why it works: it has a natural-looking mix of short and long words and sentence lengths, like real prose, but it can't be read, so it doesn't distract.
This generator builds sentences of 6 to 15 words and paragraphs of 4 to 7 sentences from a vocabulary of classic lorem ipsum words, with occasional commas, so blocks of text look varied and realistic. Choose paragraphs, sentences or an exact word count. Tick the HTML option to get each paragraph wrapped in <p> tags, ready to paste into code. Press Generate again for a fresh variation.
Formula
Example
Asking for 3 paragraphs with the classic opening gives around 150–300 words, starting "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." followed by randomly built sentences. A request for 50 words returns exactly 50, useful for testing how a product description or card layout handles a fixed length. With the HTML option, the output looks like <p>Lorem ipsum…</p>.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing, deliberately. It's a scrambled excerpt of a Latin text by Cicero. 'Lorem' isn't a real word: it's the end of 'dolorem' (pain), cut off mid-word.
Why not just use real text as a placeholder?
Readable text draws attention to its meaning, and reviewers start editing the words. Lorem ipsum keeps the focus on layout and type.
Should I leave lorem ipsum on a live site?
No. Placeholder text on a published page looks unfinished and can hurt search rankings. Replace it with real content before launch.
