How it works

Shop signs, coupons and checkout pages describe discounts in different ways, and stacked offers in particular are easy to misjudge. This calculator gives the price you'll actually pay, how much you save, and the true combined discount when two percentage reductions are applied one after the other.

The key point about stacked discounts is that they multiply rather than add. "25% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout" doesn't mean 35% off. The second discount is taken from the already reduced price, so you pay 75% × 90% = 67.5% of the original, a total discount of 32.5%. The bigger the discounts, the bigger the gap: 50% plus 50% is 75% off, not free.

If you're in a country where sales tax is added at the till, such as the US or Canada, enter the rate to see the final amount on your receipt. Tax is applied after the discounts, which is how it works in almost all places. In countries where shelf prices already include VAT, leave the tax at 0. Use the quantity box for multi-buy purchases and the currency menu for any currency.

Formula

sale price = price × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂) total discount = 1 − (1 − d₁)(1 − d₂) final price = sale price × quantity × (1 + tax rate) savings = (price − sale price) × quantity

Discounts and tax are written as decimals, so 25% = 0.25.

Example

A jacket costs $80. With 25% off, it's $60. An extra 10% coupon takes 10% of $60, so you pay $54 and save $26. The combined discount is 32.5%, not 35%. If 8% sales tax is added at the register, the final total is $58.32.

Frequently asked questions

Do two discounts add together?

No. Each discount applies to the price after the previous one, so 20% + 20% is 36% off, not 40%. The order doesn't matter: 20% then 30% gives the same result as 30% then 20%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $45 item at 25% off was originally 45 ÷ 0.75 = $60.

Is tax calculated before or after the discount?

Almost always after, on the discounted price. That's what this calculator does.
