How it works
Working out a tip and then dividing the bill between friends is simple arithmetic that's surprisingly annoying at the end of a meal. Enter the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people, and this calculator gives the tip, the total and each person's share. The table compares common tip percentages at a glance.
Tipping customs vary a lot around the world. In the United States, 15–20% is standard at sit-down restaurants, with 18–20% now common, and tips make up much of servers' income. In Canada, 15–20% is also normal. In the UK and much of Europe, a service charge of around 10–12.5% may already be on the bill. If it isn't, 10% is a generous tip in many places. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is generally not expected. Always check the bill for an included service charge before adding a tip.
Some people tip on the pre-tax amount and some on the total. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount. Tick Round each share up if you're paying in cash or want a simple number; the calculator shows the slightly higher effective tip that results.
Formula
Quick mental shortcut: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left. Double it for 20%, or add half of it again for 15%.
Example
A dinner bill of $85 with an 18% tip: the tip is $15.30 and the total $100.30. Split between 3 people, each pays $33.43. Rounding each share up to $34 makes the total $102, an effective tip of 20%. At 20% the tip would be $17.00 and each share $34.00.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides traditionally suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is usually small.
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% for table service is standard. Elsewhere, customs vary from about 10% to nothing at all. Check whether a service charge is already included.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Calculate the tip percentage on the whole bill, then have each person add that percentage to what they ordered. This calculator assumes an even split.
