How it works
Area tells you how much flat surface something covers: a floor, a wall to paint, a garden, a plot of land or a country. Area units are squares of length units, which is where most conversion mistakes come from. A metre is about 3.28 feet, but a square metre is about 10.76 square feet, because you multiply the factor by itself (3.28084² ≈ 10.764).
Homes are usually measured in square metres in most of the world and in square feet in the US, Canada and the UK property market. Land is measured in hectares (10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side) or acres (43,560 ft², about 4,047 m²). One hectare is roughly 2.47 acres. An acre was historically the area a team of oxen could plough in a day, and a football pitch is about 0.7 to 1.8 acres depending on the code.
This converter works through square metres and shows every unit at once. It also gives the side length of a square with the same area, which helps you picture a size, for example that a hectare is a 100 m × 100 m square.
Formula
Example
An apartment of 100 m² is 100 ÷ 0.09290304 = 1,076.39 ft². A room of 12 ft × 15 ft is 180 ft², or 16.72 m². A 5-acre plot is 5 × 4,046.86 = 20,234 m², about 2.02 hectares, or a square roughly 142 m on each side.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Multiply by 0.0929, or divide by 10.764. 1,500 ft² is about 139.4 m².
How big is an acre?
43,560 square feet or about 4,047 m². It's a bit smaller than an American football field without the end zones, or about 63.6 m × 63.6 m as a square.
Why isn't 1 m² equal to 3.28 ft²?
Because area is length times length. One metre is 3.28 feet on each side, so one square metre is 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76 square feet.
