How it works

Volume measures how much space something takes up, or how much a container holds. The metric system keeps it simple: a litre is the volume of a 10 cm cube, a millilitre is a 1 cm cube (the same as a cubic centimetre), and a cubic metre is 1,000 litres. Liquids, fuel, drinks and medicine are sold in litres and millilitres in most of the world.

The imperial and US systems are more confusing, because the US and UK units share names but not sizes. A US gallon is 3.785 litres; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres, about 20% bigger. The pints differ in the same way, which is why a British pint of beer (568 ml) is larger than an American one (473 ml). Oddly, the fluid ounces go the other way: a US fluid ounce (29.57 ml) is slightly larger than a UK one (28.41 ml), because a UK pint holds 20 fluid ounces and a US pint holds 16.

Check which system a recipe, fuel figure or product label is using before converting. This converter labels every unit clearly as US or UK and shows all the equivalents at once. For converting ingredient volumes to weights, such as cups of flour to grams, use the cooking converter.

Formula

1 US gal = 3.785411784 l = 4 qt = 8 pt = 16 cups = 128 fl oz 1 UK gal = 4.54609 l = 8 UK pints = 160 UK fl oz 1 US cup = 236.588 ml · 1 tbsp = 3 tsp = 14.787 ml 1 ft³ = 28.3168 l · 1 m³ = 1,000 l

Example

1 US gallon of milk is 3.785 litres, while a UK gallon is 4.546 litres. A 2-litre bottle of soda holds 67.6 US fluid ounces, or about 8.45 US cups. A bathtub holding 150 litres contains about 39.6 US gallons, 33 UK gallons or 5.3 cubic feet.

Frequently asked questions

Are US and UK gallons the same?

No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK imperial gallon is 4.546 litres. Fuel economy figures in miles per gallon differ between the two countries for this reason.

How many millilitres are in a cup?

A US cup is 236.6 ml. Metric cups, used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, are 250 ml. A UK cup was historically 284 ml but is rarely used now.

Is a millilitre the same as a cubic centimetre?

Yes. 1 ml = 1 cm³ (also written cc). A litre is 1,000 cm³.
