Cooking Measurement Converter

Convert recipe measurements between cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, millilitres, grams and ounces, with ingredient densities for flour, sugar, butter and more.

How to use the cooking Measurement Converter

  1. Enter the amount from your recipe.
  2. Choose the ingredient. Converting between volume (cups, spoons, ml) and weight (grams, ounces) depends on how dense it is.
  3. Choose the unit the recipe uses and the unit you want.
  4. The result updates instantly as you type. There is no button to press.
  5. Use Copy result to copy the figures, or Copy link to share a link that reopens the cooking Measurement Converter with the same inputs.

How it works

Recipes from the United States measure most ingredients by volume, in cups and spoons, while recipes from Europe, the UK and Australia usually weigh dry ingredients in grams. Converting between the two isn't a single number, because a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar or honey. This converter uses a typical density for each ingredient to turn volumes into weights and back.

For spoon and cup conversions within the same system, no density is needed: 1 US cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 236.6 ml, and 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons. For volume-to-weight conversions, the calculator uses standard grams-per-cup values that are widely used by bakers, for example 125 g for a cup of all-purpose flour, 200 g for granulated sugar and 227 g for butter (two US sticks).

Dry ingredients are the least predictable. A cup of flour scooped straight from the bag can weigh 20–30% more than one spooned in and levelled. For baking, where ratios matter, weighing with a kitchen scale is the most reliable method. Also check the cup: Australian, New Zealand and Canadian recipes often use a 250 ml metric cup rather than the US cup of about 237 ml.

Formula

grams = volume (ml) × density (g/ml) density = grams per US cup / 236.588 1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 8 fl oz = 236.588 ml

Example densities (g per US cup): water 237, flour 125, sugar 200, brown sugar 220, butter 227, honey 340, rolled oats 90.

Example

1 cup of all-purpose flour is about 125 g (4.4 oz). The same cup of granulated sugar is 200 g, and of honey 340 g. A UK recipe calling for 250 g of butter needs about 1.1 US cups, or 17.6 tablespoons. Three tablespoons of cocoa powder is about 19 g.
